    FAQ’s for Adults & Children

    • Do I need to obtain a referral for Psychology services?

      No, however should you be eligible (speak with your GP/Psychiatrist/Paediatrician) and wish to claim a rebate from Medicare, you will need to obtain a referral letter and Mental Health Care Plan from any one of these practitioners and provide this at the initial appointment.

    • Can I obtain a Medicare rebate or lodge a claim with my health fund?

      Psychological counselling services qualify for a Medicare rebate if you bring a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician to the first session. Your Private Health Fund “extras cover” may also cover you for counselling* but you cannot claim from both Medicare and your Private Health Fund for these services. Medicare often pays a higher rebate that what may be claimable from your Private Health Fund.
      Assessments are not covered by Medicare. Your Private Health Fund “extras cover” may cover you for assessments*
      (* Please check with your Private Health Fund directly).

    • How does a Mental Health Care Plan and Medicare rebate work?

      With a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) you are able to access a Medicare rebate for Counselling services. Please take note of the following point:
      You must have a diagnosable mental health concern (e.g. anxiety, depression, etc);
      You must have seen your GP (or psychiatrist or paediatician) and obtained a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) for the condition;
      You can access up to 10 counselling sessions in a calendar year;
      There will be a gap to pay above the Medicare rebate;
      You may reapply for a further Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP in a subsequent calendar year.

    • What is an Assessment?

      An Assessment refers to testing and other forms of information gathering done to help answer client questions about possible learning disabilities, attention problems, behavioural problems, school/work difficulties, or other cognitive concerns. Initially, the Psychologist will meet with you to discuss your current issues and collect any relevant historical information. The Psychologist will determine the appropriate testing suite to be performed. This approach will scientifically assess the client’s condition. Completing the assessment suite with you or your child may take up to 3 hours at a time, or may be undertaken over a number of appointments (conditions apply).
      After completing the testing, the Psychologist will prepare a written report with the results and tailored recommendations, and meet with you to discuss the assessed outcomes.

    • Do you provide services for WorkCover Claims?

      Yes we do. Please provide details of your case worker and claim number at the time of making an appointment.

    • How long will I need to see a Psychologist for?

      The number of sessions you have with your Psychologist will vary for each individual. Some issues may only require brief interventions while others may be more complex and require more time. As you work with your Psychologist over the first three to four sessions you will develop a plan with them to give you a better idea of what to expect.
