However, if you are seeking psychological counselling and wish to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a referral and a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician. This must be provided at your initial counselling session. It’s important to note that assessments like dyscalculia testing are not covered by Medicare, but may be claimable under your Private Health Fund extras cover (check with your fund directly).
Psychological counselling may be eligible for a Medicare rebate if you bring a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician to your first session. The number of ongoing sessions with your Psychologist will depend on your specific needs. Some concerns may be addressed with short-term support, while others may be more complex and require a longer-term approach.
